Protecting our markets by supporting retailers The Australian wool industry recognises the importance of developing alternatives to mulesing and has been working on solutions for some time. Be assured that the Australian wool industry is progressing towards to fulfilling its commitment to the phasing out of the current practice of mulesing by 2010. A WI is currently developing a number of alternatives to mulesing that are extremely promising (see page 6 for a summary of progress). By 2010, each woolgrower will decide on their own integrated flystrike management strategy using a wide range of tools provided by a range of businesses. Retailers around the world have recently been showing renewed interest in mulesing. It is vital that they completely understand that the Australian wool industry stands by its commitment to the phasing out of the current practice of mulesing by 2010. Consequently the wool industry must work together to support these retailers and the supply chain around the world during this period of heightened interest. I completely reject the claim by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that the wool industry is 'reneging' on the commitment to end mulesing. Remember to exercise caution iflistening to the media hype of such groups, which are renowned for misrepresenting the facts to advance their broader campaign against Australian farmers. On 19 March, the AWI Board unanimously passed the following resolution regarding the wool industry's commitment to the phasing out of the current practice of mulesing: RESOLUTION: the AWl Board unanimously resolved that, as required by the decision of the whole of industry meeting in November 2004,AWI will continue to vigorously research alternatives to surgical mulesing in support of the industry's commitment to the phasing out of surgical mulesing by 3 I December 20 I 0 and fully endorses the use of pain relief in the interim. The AWI Board members that passed the resolution are Ian McLachlan AO, Brian van Rooyen, Chris Abell, Kevin Bell, Roger Fletcher, Wal Merriman and Chick Olsson. While we all know that a key priority for Australian farmers is raising healthy and contented animals, it is important that we ensure global retailers are aware of this priority by sticking firm to our 2010 commitment. - CRAIG WELSH, CHIEF EXECUTIVE AWINEWS Woolmark supporting the world's best To celebrate the revival of the Woolmark and reinforce its status in the fashion world, AWl has created the Australian Merino Wool mark Prize.The annual prize is designed to become the benchmark by which modern style is recognised. Australian Merino wool is the original eco-fibre, which is continually evolving to become finer and more luxurious.The prize will be awarded, by an AWl-appointed jury of international fashion experts, to a young designer showing excellence in design using Merino wool yarns or wool-blended yarns with a minimum 50 per cent wool content. Contestants are encouraged to create designs that are 'cutting edge', but elegant and timeless. Ten of the world's best young designers have been selected by the committee and they will submit design sketches to fit within a basic range of categories. The reward for the young designers is the chance to work with the best mills, knitters and spinners in the world, who will make up their sample collections for the July showcase event. Business partners who have signed on include Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia, Filpucci, Millefili, Lineapiu, Cariaggi Lanificio, Igea, Aurea Filcrosa and Biella Yarn by Suedwolle. The winner of the Woolmark Prize will receive aid in the sourcing and the development of Australian Merino wool yarn and knitted fabrics, support in the manufacturing of a prototype collection, presentation of the winning collection during the autumn/winter 2009 fashion shows, assistance in accessing distribution and retail networks, and marketing advice. Contestants are: Louise Goldin (UK),Tom Scott (US),Japanese label Everlasting Sprout, Qui Hao (China),Annalisa Dunn (UK), Xavier Brisoux (France), Chryst! Fischer (Belgium), Marielle van de Yen (the Netherlands), Shao Jia (China), and Rubecksenyamanaka, a label run by a Norwegian and a Japanese designer. They were selected by a panel comprising Claude Untrau from Wool mark; Stephen Todd of Concept and Images; Sid Bryan, a professor at St Martin's College and London's Royal College of Art; Sarah Mower, a writer for style.com; Olivier Saillard, a curator at Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris; andYalerie Steele from New York's Fashion Institute of Technology. The entrants' collections will be displayed at the Palais de Tokyo, a contemporary art museum in Paris, from 3 to 6 July, with the winner to be announced at an event for the international media and fashion apparel industry on 3 July. It is intended that the prize will help to reposition Australian Merino wool as a fibre of choice for international designers, and help increase consumer awareness of the Woolmark and Australian Merino wool fibre.
