Anew management tool -- Making More From Sheep -- has been developed with the input of nearly 250 leading sheep producers and technical experts to help sheep producers increase their productivity, profitability and overall satisfaction with their farming businesses. AWI and Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) have joined forces to develop this best management practice package. Making More From Sheep is a comprehensive guide based around 11 modules that cover all aspects of sheep management and production. In one handy reference the Making More From Sheep manual captures the experiences of leading sheep producers and technical specialists, together with the latest recommendations from research and development, to help users identify and improve the 20 per cent of decisions that have 80 per cent of the impact on business profitability and risk control. Making More From Sheep has been developed with special attention to ease-of-use and navigation. There is a quick quiz to identify areas of an enterprise that need attention and 'at a glance' summaries on each page to speed up investigation. The manual aims to consolidate, for sheep producers, in one easy-to-use guide, a complete range of practices to reduce the cost of production on their farms. These innovative practices are in areas such as pastures and grazing, sheep health, and genetic technologies to breed more productive sheep. A major feature of the manual is a series of self- assessment and benchmarking tools to help sheep producers decide what to focus on first to maximise production and profitability. For readers who want to delve even deeper into a particular subject there are useful links to websites and further references. The Making More From Sheep manual is designed as a stand-alone reference but importantly will be supported by seminars, forums and training to assist sheep producers to ensure that they are applying the latest knowledge and tools to their wool and sheepmeat businesses. The Making More From Sheep program is a key plank in our continuing efforts to deliver on-farm knowledge and technology to help sheep producers increase the long-term profitability and sustainability of their businesses and the broader industry. The modules cover: planning for success, market focused wool production, market focused lamb and sheepmeat production, being a capable and confident producer, managing your farm's natural resources, healthy soils, growing more pasture, turning pasture into product, gaining from genetics, weaning more lambs, and producing healthy and contented sheep. Each module contains critical 'must do' procedures, tools to get sheep producers started and signposts to further information and assistance. The quick quiz in the Making More From Sheep manual aims to help sheep producers assess the areas of their business with the most potential benefit and to give some idea of the scale of improvement that the business can achieve from each of the modules. Sheep producers who decide to make use of the Making More From Sheep package will discover ways to lift productivity and quickly identify limitations in current management or farming practices. ú The best advice from the best in the business The wisdom of nearly 250 sheep producers is behind Making More From Sheep, a new guide to maximising production and profitability 10 PROFITABILITY BEYOND THE BALE Producer Alison Tancred at 'The Maze', near Gulargambone, NSW.
