Beyond the Bale : December 2011
December 2011 BEYOND THE BALE 32 ON-FARM The Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association (AMSEA) which manages the national sire evaluation program has recently released its latest annual publication, Merino Superior Sires 17. AMSEA's Executive Officer, Ben Swain says this latest version of Merino Superior Sires details the results of sire evaluation trials on 10 sites across Australia between 2006 and 2010. "The results from progeny testing over 220 of Australia's leading sires from 123 individual studs are included in this year 's edition," Mr Swain says. Sires are tested by joining approximately 50 ewes to each sire. The progeny from these joinings are then managed together at each site for up to two years whilst a wide range of both measured and visually assessed traits are recorded. Link sires are joined at each site, each year which makes it possible to link across the sites and across years within a site. The high level of linkage required is a feature of Sire Evaluation requirements. The results for each sire reported in Merino Superior Sires 17 uses Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) and Indexes. The rankings of sires within a site have shown to be very similar to how those same sires rank in the MERINOSELECT across flock rankings. The MERINOSELECT website results are updated every fortnight see www.sheepgenetics.org.au/ MERINOSELECT There is also more detail in each of the sites' individual Site Report, which can be found on the Merino Superior Sires website. "Site Reports list a range of additional information that are not available on the MERINOSELECT website and are an ideal way of describing the performance of an individual sire in a particular environment," Mr Swain says. "Site Reports provide the detailed information on the visual performance of a sire's progeny, such as wool quality, pigmentation and conformation traits. They are within site results." A summary of the within site results are listed in the table below. Entries are now open for the 2012 sire evaluation trials and breeders are encouraged to contact the site of their FAST FACTS l The latest version of Merino Superior Sires, including results of over 220 leading sires, was released in October. l Site Reports that provide detailed results for each site are available online. l Entries are now open for 2012 sire evaluation.
