Beyond the Bale : September November 2009
September -- November 2009 BEYOND THE BALE INNOVATIONS 17 Anew manual containing more than 100 on-property innovations is now available to Australian rangeland wool and meat producers to help them improve the running of their businesses and encourage innovative thinking and practices. The Australian Pastoral Property Innovation Manual was produced by AWI's Bestprac network with funding from the Australian Government's 'Caring for our Country' program. The manual has been designed to 'harvest' and profile innovations that are being implemented across the Bestprac network, which extends throughout the rangeland regions of Queensland, NSW, South Australia and Western Australia. There is a broad range of innovations included in the manual covering business management and administration, business diversification, people, production, the environment and infrastructure and equipment. The innovations have demonstrated business growth, increased productivity, increased efficiency, improved standards of safety, enhanced quality and/or better environmental outcomes. David Lindner and his family of 'Wonga Station', Morgan, SA, are woolgrowers and active Bestprac group members. Wonga has a culture of innovative improvements to infrastructure and equipment on the property to increase efficiency, improve safety standards and increase the life of the infrastructure. "The manual highlights the aspects of good business management, risk management and recognition of OH&S in rural business," David says. David likes the manual format, which provides producers with a range of ideas for how a particular concept has been applied on-property. The variety of innovations contributed to the manual demonstrates the diversity of innovative ideas across the Australian pastoral zone and the ability of these producers to adapt and implement innovative thinking and concepts to improve their business. David is looking forward to gaining new ideas from the Australian Pastoral Property Innovation Manual. "It may spark a new way of looking at something I do now or adapting the idea (from the manual) to another use to make more profit," he says. "This manual shows a different side to what advances are made (in the wool industry), which are not measured in the 'normal' way, by highlighting that issues (in pastoral businesses) need to be combated in simple, cost and time-effective ways."
